Proof of address for Social Insurance Number SIN application

* * * IMPORTANT NOTE * * *

Starting April 2023, Service Canada Social Insurance Number office no longer requires applicants to submit proof of address for their online application.

A proof of address is a document that confirms the address indicated in the online SIN application.

The Confirmation of SIN paper will be mailed to this address.

The proof of address must respect the following criteria (redact any personal information not referenced below):

  • It must be issued by one of the following: a government, a company, an institution, an organization, a landlord or an employer and be:
    • a document; or
    • an attestation letter signed by the issuer
  • It must contain the name (family name and given name) that appears on the applicant’s primary, secondary or supporting document
    • If applying on behalf of someone else, it must contain the parent, legal guardian or legal representative’s name (family name and given name) as it appears on their primary, secondary or supporting document

    • If applying on behalf of someone else, it must clearly show the parent, legal guardian or legal representative’s address and match the one on the online SIN application
  • Must be in official language, English or French

Example of acceptable documents as Proof of Address

An original letter from employer, school institution, organization that confirms the SIN applicant’s name and address, and signed by the issuer of the letter.

An original letter issued from the banking institution.

A utility bill

A lease agreement between tenant and landlord.

Note: Address appears on your provincial driver’s license can not be used a valid proof of address for your online SIN application.

Common Mistakes

Please be advised that an envelope is not an acceptable proof of address for your SIN application. Additionally, your correspondence from the SIN Program, such as a previous Confirmation of SIN letter or a rejection letter, is not acceptable as a proof of address

Using  employer’s address

Generally speaking, the mail address for SIN application must be a private address, not an employer’s address. Please do not instruct to mail your confirmation of SIN paper to your company’s HR either.

No Confirmation of SIN letter will be sent to an employer’s address, unless the client resides on the employer’s premises.

In rare situation where employee works as a live-in caregiver at the employer’s domicile, the Confirmation of SIN paper could be mailed to the employer’s address, therefore a document or attestation letter from the employer must clearly state that the employee resides at that address
