How long does it take to process a SIN number

When applying for a Social Insurance Number (SIN) in Canada, the fastest and most convenient method is to apply online. If all required documents are submitted correctly, Service Canada processes online applications within 5 business days. Once processed, the SIN is visible on the applicant’s My Service Canada Account almost immediately.

For those who prefer or need to apply in person or by mail, these options are also available, but processing times may vary, especially during peak periods when Service Canada experiences higher volumes of applications, such as in the summer and winter seasons when many international students and temporary workers apply for their SINs.

It’s important for applicants to ensure that all submitted documents are valid, clear, legible, and complete, as any issues with the documentation can lead to delays in the processing time.

For more detailed information, please refer to Service Canada’s guidelines on applying for a SIN available on their [official website](https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/news/2023/12/applying-online-for-a-social-insurance-number-is-the-quickest-option-for-international-students-and-workers-ahead-of-the-winter-season.html).

How long does it take to process a SIN number

In Person

Right away at local Service Canada centre.

Adults over the age of majority must present themselves with appropriate Primary Documents (e.g. Canadian birth certification, IRCC immigration document, etc) and supporting documents.

If you are applying your SIN in person at a local Service Canada centre, you will receive your Social Insurance Number right away upon completion of the interview with the Service Canada centre agent. In a situation where your documents can not be validated locally, your application request will be sent manually to SIN head office for processing. This process will take up to 30 days (plus mailing time) to finalize.

TIPS! It is recommended that if your Primary Document is unable to be validated that day during your visit, try again after a few days. This will surely be quicker than having your application sent to SIN head office to be processed.

Online – Canada.ca

Within 20 business days (1 month).

If you choose to apply your SIN through Canada.ca website, you will have to upload your original Primary and Supporting Documents through the online SIN application portal. You must ensure to have appropriate technology tools (e.g. smartphone to take clear pictures, computer, internet, etc) in order to send your online application appropriately. Any unclear image upload will result in further delaying your SIN application.

If you did not receive your Confirmation of SIN letter after 25 business days, please ensure to contact SIN head office to follow up on the status of your SIN application.

By Mail

Greater than 20 business days (1 month).

If you choose to submit your SIN application by mail, you will have to send your original Primary and Supporting Documents along with your application. If you send your application by registered mail, SIN processing office will return your document(s) in the same way. Service Canada is not responsible for documents lost in the mail. We do not recommend this option.

If you did not receive your Confirmation of SIN letter after 25 business days, please ensure to contact SIN head office to follow up on the status of your SIN application.
