Canada Revenue Agency offers the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program.

The deadline to file your 2023 taxes is approaching and you might be considering getting help with your return.

Well, the Canada Revenue Agency offers a service across Canada so you can get your taxes done for free.

Here’s what you need to know about doing your Canada taxes with a free clinic, including what the service is, who is eligible and where the free tax clinics are in Ontario.

The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) is a partnership between the CRA and community organizations.

Organizations host free tax clinics and volunteers complete income tax returns for eligible individuals.

According to the CRA, these free tax clinics helped almost 800,000 people in Canada get more than $2 billion in benefit, credit and refund payments last year.

Free tax clinics offer walk-in (your tax return is done with no appointment needed), drop-off (your tax return is done and you pick it up at a later time), and appointment (in-person, virtual or on the phone) services.

You need to have a modest income and a simple tax situation to be eligible for the CVITP.

Modest income is considered between $35,000 to $52,500 for one-person to five-person families.

You generally have a simple tax situation if you have no income or your income comes from employment, pension, benefits, Registered Retirement Savings Plans, scholarships, fellowships, bursaries or grants, or interest under $1,000.
